According to reports, the commencement of commercial operations for the Metro lines 7 and 2A will miss the earlier deadline of October 2021.

It is expected to begin from January next year, 2022.

Meanwhile, last week, MMRDA began test runs on Line 2A between Charkop and Dahisar. Both the lines are expected to reduce traffic congestion by 25%.

In a TOI report, Metropolitan Commissioner SVR Srinivas said: “A team from Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO, Lucknow, acting as technical advisor and consultant for Railways) will start the inspection next week. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) may start the inspection of Line 7 in October.”

MMRDA will start commercial operations on both the corridors with 10 trains, of which two have arrived. Metro 2A is 17.5 km long and Metro 7 is 18.6 km long.

Both Metro lines will slash current travel time of 75 to 90 minutes to barely 25 minutes and are expected to notch a daily ridership of over 6,00,000 in a decade, besides helping decongest road traffic.

The MMRDA said that about 80% of the civil work on both the lines has been completed and the system work is "in full swing". Stairs and escalators are still being worked on at some stations. So, there are still a few months left for the commercial operations to start.

The test run for Line 7 (Aarey to Dahisar), which runs along Link Road and Western Express Highway, was flagged off by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on May 31.

Initially, the MMRDA had set a deadline of December 2019 for starting the services, but there were delays, due to the pandemic. The workers fled to their home states, and work came to a standstill.
