In a worrisome news, tomato prices of both the wholesale and retail have seen a sharp rise in the past few days across Maharashtra and other cities in the nation.

According to reports, the maximum retail price for tomatoes have touched INR 100 per kg in Mumbai, whereas in Nagpur and other districts of Vidarbha, it has reached beyond INR 100-mark per kg at INR 102. Meanwhile, the wholesale price is INR 50 per kg.

There are various factors behind this hike such as decline in production and dip in supply owing to excess heat along with delayed rainfall and monsoon. Experts stated that rains are essential for the pollination of tomato plants and their absence has led to decline in the production. Moreover, the high temperatures have made it difficult for tomatoes to grow.

The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi witnessed a sharp decline in the supply of tomatoes.

Previously, tomatoes were available in the wholesale market at INR 18-28 per kg. However, on Thursday, they were being sold at INR 28-50 in the APMC market. Retail prices even reached up to INR 60 to INR 80 per kg.
