In view of the pandemic, the Mumbai Police are to not use breathalyzers this year on New Year’s eve to catch motorists in an inebriated state.

As per reports, officers are to carry out a separate drive to catch those indulging in drunken driving on the night of December 31 and January 1. Moreover, checkpoints for night curfew will be carried out in order to catch such drivers.

Meanwhile, authorities have stated that due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the special drives were stopped, especially the use of breathalyzers due to the contagious nature of the disease, for the last few months. As a result, a decision was taken to not use those even during New Year’s eve when the maximum number of such cases are seen.

The police had booked 778 motorists last year, the majority of them on two-wheelers. Moreover, as many as 40,000 police personnel were deployed to monitor celebrations with nearly 2,705 traffic police personnel manning nakabandis on major roads.

On the other hand, on Saturday, December 26, India recorded 22,272 cases of the coronavirus taking the COVID-19 tally in the country to 1,01,69,118. According to the Health Ministry, over 70 per cent of the daily new cases are being reported by 10 states and union territory namely, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat and Delhi. Furthermore, it stated that over 75 per cent of the deaths are being reported from Maharashtra, West Bengal, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
