October 2 marked the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and also the 5th anniversary of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan. However, irony redefined the day when a train was derailed between Mahim and Kings Circle on the harbour line due to trash on the railway tracks.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) bound train was derailed at 11:25 am at the Kings Circle and Mahim stretch which is also infamous for various slum encroachments. Heaps of garbage are thrown at the tracks by the slum dwellers and they are even seen defecating along the tracks.
Notably, earlier this month, a guard of the local train was robbed of his mobile phone along this stretch. Western Railway chief spokesperson Ravinder Bhaker stated that an enquiry has been set up for the derailment and garbage has been a big issue along the stretch and the primary cause for the derailment. The authorities will soon come up with a solution for the same.
