Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation's (UMC) water bill of INR 400 crore was waived in a meeting chaired by State Industries Minister Uday Samant at his Muktagiri residence on Sunday, March 12.

About 140 million litres of water is supplied to the UMC through the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

The UMC has been sanctioned a quota of about 120 MLD and over and above this 20 MLD water is being charged at INR 12 per thousand litres. Industries Minister Uday Samant has decided to increase the price by INR 8 per thousand litres.

Additional Commissioner Jamir Lengrekar said, "MIDC was charging exorbitant rates for supplying water to UMC over and above the earlier sanctioned quota and the civic body was not paying it, dues of the Ulhasnagar civic body were piling up over the years. Meeting Industries Minister Uday Samant chaired by MP Shrikant Shinde on regular follow up action.

Uday Samant directed the MIDC to plan in such a way that the UMC pays the principal amount of about INR 200 crore in reasonable installments over the next 10 years by waiving off such penal charges. Hence, the huge burden that was going to fall on the UMC has been reduced and crores of rupees will be saved.

Instructing the MIDC officials, Samant said that Shahad, Shantinagar, Vitthalwadi areas of the city are facing water shortage due to low pressure water supply from Shahad pumping station. He also directed the officials to restore water in Camps 4 and 5, where the supply was disrupted for a day.
