Even though the instances of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai has decreased, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is still taking punitive action against citizens who venture out of their homes without face masks.

On the other hand, while several people wear masks, they wear it usually for the fear of reprisals. Moreover, with the Mumbai locals resuming operations for everyone, there has also been reported congestion at the railway stations.

Meanwhile, the BMC had earlier informed the traffic marshals to not fine commuters who were found without face masks inside their private vehicles. However, the commuters travelling in private vehicles like autos or local trains, have to continue wearing their face masks or they will be penalized. This comes after several passengers reportedly complained after getting fined by the clean-up marshals of the civic body for not wearing masks inside their private cars.

In the midst of the coronavirus, the usage of masks has been made mandatory across the country. Mumbai, similarly, had made the usage of masks a compulsion. However, several people have been observed in the city who have ventured out without the necessary protection. The BMC as a consequence had earlier decided to impose a penalty of ₹1,000 on those who step outside their houses without face masks on.

Maharashtra clocked 2,673 fresh cases of the coronavirus cases on Sunday, February 7, which took the COVID-19 tally in the state to 20,44,071. However, a total of 1,622 patients were discharged during the day, which improved the recovery count to 19,55,548, according to the state health department.
