A fisherman based on Palghar’s Vadrai village was killed at the Gujarat coast, by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) recently, and this has spread anger among the citizens. Protesting against the same, the local panchayat on Monday, November 8, 2021, called for a bandh due to which shops, public buses and other establishments were closed. 


Identified as Sridhar Ramesh Chamre (32), the fisherman was killed at approximately 4pm, on Saturday, November 6, 2021, near the International Maritime Boundary Line.  He is survived by his parent, wife and two daughters. The villagers were in shock after knowing about the incident and a report regarding the same was published in the Free Press Journal. 


Officials stated that the bandh was announced condemning his demise. The villagers remained indoors, had maintained peace in the locality and kept the roads were deserted on Monday. 


Chamre’s father said that the boat, Jalpari, carrying the seven fishermen had not crossed the Pakistan border and the villagers informed that if the boat had crossed the designated line, officials in Pakistan should have held Chamre in captive, rather than killing him. The body of the deceased will soon be brought to the village for the final rites post the formalities are completed. 


Besides Chamre, the other injured fisherman is being treated at a hospital in Okha. Chamre had started working on the boat since the last three months and was shot in the cabin of the boat. Information was given by the owner of the boat, who added that the captain of the boat was also injured in the firing 


An FIR has been registered by Gujarat Police against 10 personnel of the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) stating the charges of murder and attempt to murder. 


Considering this to be a serious issue, the officials are going to discuss the matters associated with unprovoked firing by the PMSA. Talks will be held with the officials from the Pakistan and a confirmation was given by the authorities in Delhi.
