The position of senior citizens has always been respectable in Indian culture, because they are the backbone of the family. The government stands with senior citizens to provide them a safe, health-friendly environment for the rest of their lives. School Education Minister and Guardian Minister of Mumbai City District Deepak Kesarkar said that a recreational center for senior citizens will be started in Mumbai within a month.


On the occasion of Senior Citizens Day, a seminar was organised by the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance at the World Trade Centre. On this occasion, MLA Sada Sarvankar, MLA Devrao Holi, Social Justice Department Secretary Sumant Bhange, Social Welfare Commissioner Omprakash Bakoria, BARTI Director General Sunil Vare, Senior Citizens Federation President Annasaheb Tekale etc. were present.

Minister Deepak Kesarkar said that recreational centers for senior citizens are being run in New York, USA. On similar lines, such a center will also be started in Mumbai and separate buses will be arranged for the transportation of senior citizens. Senior citizens can spend their days in this center as per their choice. We started a Grandparents Day activity in schools. On this occasion, programs were organised across the state. The state government has introduced a free ST travel concession for citizens above seventy-five years of age. Sanjay Gandhi Destitute Grant Scheme and Shravanbal Seva State Pension Scheme have been increased.


On this occasion, grandparents above 80 years of age were honoured by the dignitaries. Besides, organisations like Facecom, Helpage India, Janseva Foundation, which are doing remarkable work for senior citizens, were also honoured.
