The Virar–Dahanu rail corridor project has reached key milestones, with 86% of earthwork and 41% of track laying now complete. The project is expected to be completed by June 2027.

The corridor involves massive civil engineering efforts. So far, 2.18 lakh cubic metres of cutting and more than 23.5 lakh cubic metres of earth filling have been carried out. Several bridges and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) are complete, including key waterway crossings for uninterrupted train movement.

With this, station infrastructure is also being developed. Construction of station decks is ongoing at Virar and Vaitarna. The corridor will increase the capacity and frequency of suburban services. It will ease pressure on the Western Railway network and improve daily commutes for thousands of passengers.

At Palghar, Saphale, Kelve Road, Boisar, Vangaon, Umroli, and Dahanu Road, new buildings, foot overbridges, connecting overpasses, staff quarters, relay huts, and control facilities are in advanced stages. At Umroli, Boisar, and Vangaon, finishing touches are almost complete. Signalling and telecom works, including cable laying, are underway at all of the mentioned places.

Currently, the stretch between Virar and Dahanu Road has only nine stations. From these, over 5.8 lakh people use Virar every day, while Dahanu Road handles more than 2.6 lakh passengers. Even smaller stations like Vaitarna and Boisar see heavy daily traffic.

To deal with this, seven new stations have been identified for the stretch. These are BSES Colony, Wadhiv, Sartodi, Makunsar, Chintupada, Panchali, and Wanjarwada. These are not part of the current quadrupling project but are under plans.

The project will cost INR 3578 crore and is progressing under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) Phase III. Once completed, the corridor will be the longest-running infrastructure project in Mumbai’s suburban rail system.
