The water storage in the seven dams that supply water to Mumbai has come down to 32.32 percent. This is the lowest level in the last three years and this water will be sufficient only for one and a half to two months. If there is not enough rain in June, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will face a tough challenge to provide water till July.

All the seven dams namely Upper Vaitrana, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitrana, Bhatsa, Vihar, Tulsi have a total water storage of 4 lakh 67 thousand 766 million litres (32.32 percent). Mumbai receives 3,800 million litres of water per day. Accordingly, the water available now will be enough for the next two months. According to the planning of the civic body, one percent of water is sufficient for three days. That is, about 12 to 13 percent of water is used per month. But the heat of summer has started to set and the evaporation of water takes place on a large scale. As there is not enough rain in June, this water has to be supplied till July. Last year on March 25, the water reserve was 38 percent and in 2022 it was 41 percent.

As every year, after the water storage reached 50 percent, the BMC demanded 137 thousand million litres from Bhatsa Dam and 92.5 million litres from Vaitarna Dam. As the state government approved this demand, the proposed 10 percent water cut was withdrawn. The municipal officials said that the water in the reserve will be used after the current water supply is exhausted.

However, due to the maintenance work of Bhandup water treatment plant, there has been a five percent reduction in water till April 24. Last year, it rained in the month of September and the month of October was dry. Every year it rains till October and the dams are overflowing.
