Cases have been registered against 27 police officers and employees who demanded bribes from citizens in various ways such as to reduce the punishment of the accused in a crime, to release the seized material, to reduce the sections of the crime. Most of the cases are registered against the police officers of Thane city and Mira Bhayander commissionerate area.
Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are included in the Thane area of Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau. Taking and paying bribes is a crime. Every year various programs are conducted at the government level to prevent corruption. Also public awareness is done in public places. However, bribery by some corrupt officials and employees continues. Every year 100 or more cases of bribery and embezzlement are registered in the Thane area.
The police force is the department that common citizens come in contact with the most. Citizens come to the police station to file a complaint, get a passport or character verification certificate. But there is a picture of increasing corruption in the police force for the last few years.
During the period from January 1 to December 31, Thane Anti-Corruption Department's 103 cases of bribery had come to light. 15 of these cases are related to the police department and in this case, cases have been registered against 20 police officers and employees. So, 25 cases have been registered in the Thane area from January 1 to April 24, 2024 and five of these cases are related to the police. Cases have been filed against seven policemen in this case. Therefore, the image of the police is tarnished regarding the functioning of the police force.
