The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road Project has achieved a historic milestone after successfully installing the first giant Girder (bow arch string girder) connecting Bandra Worli Sea Link route.

The girder launching commenced at 2 am and concluded successfully at 3:25 am on April 26, 2024.

A second Girder is slated for installation shortly, after which remaining works will be completed and the next phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road will be opened.

Spanning from Worli to Nariman Point, the girder weighs 2,000 metric tons and measures 136 meters in length and 18 to 21 meters in width. Another beam will also be set up soon.

The BMC managed to connect these two engineering marvels using innovative techniques such as fill-and-cut methods, setting a precedent in the country's infrastructure projects.

Concrete cementing between the Mumbai Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is the next phase of the project. After completing these works, the next phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road will also begin.

BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, accompanied by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Amit Saini were present at the project site to witness this historic moment.

Deputy Commissioner (Special Engineering) Chakradhar Kandalkar, Chief Engineer (Mumbai Coastal Road Project) Girish Nikam and all concerned officers, engineers and employees of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project were lauded by Gagrani and Dr. Saini.
