Thane district will have to face water shortage for the next few months. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has planned to store water from the dams in the district till July 15. For this, the Minor Irrigation Department has decided to implement 14 per cent water cut in Thane. As a result, water supply to cities in the district will be cut off twice a month for 24 hours.

Water storage in two dams, Andhra and Baravi in Thane district were surveyed. Both the dams have a total storage capacity of 357.28 million cubic meters.

The STEM Authority, MIDC and Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran have been directed to cut off water supply till July 15. The Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran in Ambernath and Badlapur will have water cuts on Mondays in the second and fourth week of every month, while in Kalyan-Dombivali city on Tuesdays.

MIDC supplies water to Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mira Bhayander, Kalyan Dombivali, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Taloja and some parts of Badlapur. Besides, water supply is provided by STEM Authority in Thane, Bhiwandi, Mira-Bhayander areas. In some parts of Diva, Mumbra, Kalwa and Wagle Estates in Thane Municipal Corporation area, MIDC supplies water while in Thane city, STEM supplies the water. All these areas have been facing water scarcity for the last few days.
