Western Railways collects a fine of INR 8.83 lakhs in March 1st week

Maharashtra continues to report the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country and registered as many as 11,141 new cases, 6,013 recoveries, and 38 deaths in the last 24 hours, the union health ministry informed on Monday morning.

The Western Railway (WR) on Monday, March 8, said that it has collected a total fine of over INR 8 lakhs between March 1 and 6 from people travelling without a face mask.

 A sum of INR 8,83,100 was collected in the form of a fine from people not wearing masks from March 1 to March 6, read an official statement released by the Western Railways.

Earlier, the Western Railways, in a joint effort with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), collected a total fine of INR 5.97 lakh during February. As per a statement, 3,819 people were fined after they were caught without face masks in public spaces. With 430 fines, the highest number of cases were reported on February 26, resulting in a collection of INR 75,200 in fines.

While it is mandatory to wear a face mask as a preventative measure while travelling, many ignore it. While commuting, some passengers have a mask in their pocket whereas some have a mask on their chin.

In view of the situation, Mumbai civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed marshals at various stations and boundaries to take action against such passengers. In addition, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had earlier announced strict measures to curb the spread of the contagious disease adding that a fine of INR 200 will be imposed on people found without masks.
