Given that at the beginning of 2022, BMC elections are set to commence, the Congress, BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP are getting their plan of action ready. However, in the midst of all this, the question arising is what stand will the smaller parties in Mumbai take. Many smaller parties such as the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party contest BMC elections in Mumbai. It is being speculated that in the coming elections, many small parties may form an alliance to take on the big parties.
Some believe that a coalition of smaller parties can harm the larger ones since they reduce the number of seats the latter can grab its hands on.
Post breaking its alliance with Shiv Sena in the aftermath of the Maharashtra assembly elections, BJP is eyeing that a mayor arises from within its ranks. With the BJP already geared for this, the Shiv Sena too is preparing for the BMC elections.
According to some accounts, Congress has given indications of possibly fighting the BMC elections by itself, the NCP on the other hand, has yet to open its cards. However, it isn’t clear whether the MNS will contest the BMC elections alone or with the BJP.
Considering that the BMC is the richest municipality in the country, with its annual budget being equal to that many small states in the country, the BMC is also awarded additional powers that are politically effective.
Therefore, the tug of war between the BJP and Shiv Sena for the BMC elections has already commenced.
