A portion of the Bandra (E) skywalk that connects the station to Bandra court is set to be demolished and rebuilt at Rs 16.20 cr. For this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited tenders to assign a contractor, stated a report by the Times of India.

Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) had undertaken a structural audit prior to the pandemic and had recommended that repairs be done. The authority, however, decided that it was best to reconstruct the skywalk completely since the structure was in a dismal condition.

With only a portion set to be rebuilt, September 13 is the last date to submit bids. Since the skywalk passes over the Western Express Highway, it will be demolished to pave way for a section of the flyover which will be 714 meters, landing at Bandra Kurla Complex. It is anticipated that it will save travellers time since they won’t have to wait at the Kalanagar signal.

A target of 18 months has been awarded by the civic authority for the demolition and reconstruction of the skywalk which also includes the rainy season.

Chief Engineer of the BMC’s Bridges Department, Satish Thosar stated that the skywalk isn’t functioning for the public presently. He elaborated that the new skywalk is likely to follow a similar suit, with currently, 300 meters being proposed for demolition and reconstruction.

Done as a pilot project, the 1.3km elevated walkway was used by over 1 lakh people every day. The sidewalk that was 4-meter wide and 20 feet tall, was built in 2008 at Rs 13.63 cr, stated the report. Thus, in a mere 13 years, it is set for reconstruction, elucidated the account.

According to the report, across Mumbai, nearly 20 skywalks are anticipated to go through either demolition, repair or reconstruction. After the Himalaya bridge collapsed outside CST, in March 2019, BMC designated VJTI for structural audit of all 24 skywalks.
