Even though two years have passed since the Himalaya bridge collapse near the suburban railway station at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in South Mumbai, the reconstruction of the same is yet to be done.

However, in recent developments, a proposal for the same has been prepared for the approval of the contractor which is reportedly to cost the civic body INR 6 crores. According to sources, a steel beam will be laid to prevent the skeleton of the bridge from rusting.

Meanwhile, after the accident, three engineers from the bridge department were also arrested. The accident on this bridge witnessed massive criticism, especially for the civic body of Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Railways.

Back in February 2020, the civic body had approached the MHCC panel and submitted the designs of the bridge, seeking approval for its reconstruction. MHCC, in its meeting, scrutinized the plan, checked all heritage aspects and gave a nod to the model, which has an open sky plan.

According to reports, the construction work was supposed to start from April last year and the bridge was expected to be completed by December 2020. However, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the project got postponed.

In the past, the Himalaya footbridge had collapsed in 2019, back in the month of March, claiming six lives and injuring 30 more. Since the mishap, the bridge was shut with the BMC ordering an audit of all the bridges across the city of Mumbai.
