India’s first bullet train, Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project, is running behind schedule by 2.29 per cent.

Indian Railways’ ambitious project has made a physical progress of only 33.68 per cent so far. However, it is pertinent to note that the target of 35.97 per cent was supposed to be achieved by May 2023.

The 508-km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor was being constructed at an initial estimated cost of INR 1,08,000 crore. Owing to delays and fluctuations in yen value, it has gone up to nearly INR 2 lakh crore, which includes the cost of the tunnel portion.

The high-speed rail line will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad through 12 stations at a cost of INR 1.1 lakh crore with a deadline of December 2023. Except Mumbai, trains on the line will run at a speed of 320 kmph on the elevated viaduct where it will be made underground.

The Vapi-Sabarmati section is expected to be commissioned in August 2027, although the project may face opposition from officials of Coal India, which is not related to the project.
