The state government has taken necessary steps for the planned development of the Worli Jetty. The project will significantly boost water transport, emergency services, and tourism in Mumbai, Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane stated. A detailed review of the Worli Jetty development plan was conducted at a meeting held at the ministry. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, Maharashtra Maritime Board CEO Pradeep P., and officials from the relevant departments were present.
Minister Rane stated that during the construction of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, temporary jetties were built at the Emersons Garden Interchange Area and the Worli Dairy Area for the transportation of construction materials. Now that the project is nearing completion, the plan is to use these jetties for water transport, emergency medical services, water ambulances, and public transport.
In this regard, IIT Bombay, through the Maharashtra Maritime Board, conducted a structural audit, and the report stated that the Emersons Jetty is not suitable for passenger transport. However, it was determined that after making the necessary structural changes to the jetty in the Worli Dairy area, it could be used for water transport and emergency medical services.
The process of appointing a Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the pre-feasibility report, DPR, environmental permit, and other technical approvals for this project has been completed, and bidder selection is in the final stages. Meanwhile, expressions of interest have been sought from interested parties to develop a helipad at the Worli jetty under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Minister Nitesh Rane said, “The state government is committed to improving and modernizing maritime transport in Mumbai. The development of the Worli jetty is not limited to transportation; it will also be important for emergency services, tourism, and enhancing coastal connectivity.”
On this occasion, BMC chief Ashwini Bhide said that the Municipal Administration will provide all necessary support to the Maharashtra Maritime Board for the development of Worli Jetty.
