Western Railway’s RPF (Railway Protection Force) has successfully solved several passenger-related crime cases and arrested over 670 accused. The RPF achieved this success with the help of advanced CCTV surveillance systems equipped with Facial Recognition technology.

After several such successful operations, the Railway decided to install thousands of advanced CCTVs with facial recognition systems to boost security across Mumbai.

In this effort to take preventative steps for the safety and security of commuters, the Western Railway (WR) has installed 3857 CCTV cameras, 488 of which have cutting-edge facial recognition technology.

The WR's Chief Public Relations Officer, Sumit Thakur, in an official statement, said that the RPF has concentrated its efforts on preventing the theft of passengers' items from both suburban and long-distance trains.

As per a data released by the Western Railway (WR), from January 1 to September 20, 2023, 674 individuals involved in passenger crimes were arrested. Out of these 674 individuals, 343 were apprehended by the RPF Mumbai Central division.

Earlier, the Railways had installed 3857 CCTVs and kept monitoring the situation. Sharing the details an official stated, "To prevent and investigate crimes against passengers, these systems have a database of well-known criminals that includes their pictures."

The official further said that the RPF has stepped up its efforts to combat crimes involving passengers, like theft and robbery, under the guise of "Operation Yatri Suraksha," safeguarding the safety and security of rail travelers. In these operations, suspects are swiftly turned over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) for additional legal action.

In a recent success story, the RPF at Borivali detained a 24-year-old youth identified as Manish Mohan Baswat. Manish admitted to snatching a gold chain worth INR 70000 on September 20, 2023. Later, the criminal was turned over to GRP/Borivali for additional legal proceedings.

Similarly, on the same day, the Churchgate Post's Crime Prevention and Detection Squad (CPDS) caught an accused 40-year-old man named Maqbool Sheikh after carefully reviewing CCTV evidence. The defendant admitted to robbing a mobile phone valued INR 14,000 and implicated himself in another case involving a INR 8,000 mobile phone robbery. He was given to GRP/Churchgate for additional legal action.

The RPF employees of Western Railway continue to exert admirable efforts to guarantee passenger safety and security through their alertness and use of cutting-edge surveillance technology.

Meanwhile, Central Railway (CR)'s Mumbai division has decided to install 6122 cameras in all at 364 railway stations. Around 3652 of them will have facial recognition technology and be strategically located throughout 117 important railway stations.
