Western Railway’s (WR) Mumbai Central Division has identified numerous new parking spaces to meet parking needs at railway stations, especially in suburban areas, where connectivity is still a challenge.

Under this initiative, 15 new parking locations have been selected for the financial years 2024–2025 and 2025–2026. These sites together cover more than 12,000 square metres. Railway officials said most of the sites are already in service, while the rest will be available soon.

At present, the division operates 22 parking facilities across 25,837 square metres. These generate around INR 7.52 crore in annual revenue, showing the importance of parking as a key source of non-fare income.

WR has also set up eight two-wheeler parking-cum-electric vehicle charging stations at suburban points. These include three at Dadar and one each at Prabhadevi, Bandra, Mumbai Central, Vile Parle, and Andheri. Covering 2,876 square metres, these eco-friendly facilities add INR 72.88 lakh to the annual budget.

In the fiscal year 2024–2025, nine additional parking spaces were created between Churchgate and Virar, strengthening WR’s presence in suburban Mumbai. Building on this, six new locations have been identified in 2025–2026. Two of these are already operational, and four more will be opened soon.

Bandra Terminus has turned out to be amongst the top earners in this segment. Its parking and stacking facility generates INR 1.52 crore each year. The goal is to increase non-fare revenue while offering more convenience to commuters.
