Western Railway (WR) on Monday, May 25, carried a demolition drive along the tracks between Goregaon and Malad, clearing 1500 square metres of encroached land.

A total of 36 permanent encroachments and 24 temporary structures, which were located dangerously close to the railway line between Malad and Goregaon were removed.

This move comes a day after WR concluded the razing of 500 illegal structures in Garib Nagar in Bandra East.

The action was conducted between kilometre markers 28/3 and 28/6 on the eastern side in accordance with directions of the Bombay High Court, WR Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek said.

He said 168 personnel from the city police, 25 Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawans and 65 from railway police were deployed at the site during the drive.

Around 80 railway staffers, along with three JCB machines and three dumpers, were also deployed for the demolition exercise and debris removal and transportation, he added.

The operation began in the morning and by late afternoon the entire area was cleared.

The reclaimed land will support critical infrastructure development, future capacity enhancement, safer rail operations, and help prevent trespassing incidents, as per an official statement.
