The first-ever match of the opening edition of Women’s Premium League (WPL) began with Mumbai Indians (MI) facing Gujarat Giants (GG) today, March 4.

In its debut match itself, MI won by 143 runs, a huge margin, with its both batting and bowling power-packed performance.

In the first innings, Harmanpreet Kaur registered the WPL's first-ever half-century, slamming 65 runs off 30 balls, packed with 14 fours, as Mumbai posted 207/5 in 20 overs.

Amelia Kerr was in hot form and slammed an unbeaten knock of 45 runs off 24 balls. Meanwhile, Sneh Rana took two wickets for Gujarat, with Ashleih Gardner, Tanuja Kanwar and Georgia Wareham bagging a dismissal each.

Prior to the match, the crowd at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai was treated to some Bollywood style entertainment where AP Dhillon, Kiara Advani, Kriti Sanon and others performed. Then BCCI president Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah, and a host of other board officials were called up on the stage.

The office-bearers were followed by the captains of the five franchises -- Delhi Capitals' Meg Lanning, Mooney, Smriti Mandhana of Royal Challengers Bangalore, Alyssa Healy of the Warriorz and Harmanpreet. That was followed by the unveiling of the first-ever WPL trophy.

Later, GG won the toss and chose to bowl.
