The highly prestigious President's Box at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium, known for hosting top dignitaries, including actors, cricket legends, and BCCI/MCA officials, is in for a significant transformation during the upcoming 2023 World Cup in October-November. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), responsible for refurbishing the stadium for the global cricket extravaganza, has decided to introduce an open-air feel to this exclusive area, offering VIP spectators a unique "balcony-like" experience.

The President's Box Upgrade

An exclusive report in the Times of India mentioned that the President's Box, with its 200 seats, 100 allocated to BCCI officials and the remaining 100 to their MCA counterparts, will undergo extensive renovations. The revamped President's Box will feature a harmonious blend of open and enclosed seating options, encompassing both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned sections. A substantial outdoor seating area will be introduced, allowing spectators to savor the live match experience in a manner previously unavailable. MCA President Amol Kale expressed his enthusiasm for these changes, highlighting the enhancement of the on-field viewing experience.

World Cup Matches at Wankhede Stadium

Wankhede Stadium is set to host five matches during the mega tournament, making it a crucial venue for cricket enthusiasts. The tournament's schedule includes notable clashes such as the India versus Sri Lanka match on November 2 and the first semifinal on November 15. The action kicks off in Mumbai on October 21 with the England-South Africa match.

Revamping the Entire Venue

In a parallel development, the MCA recently inked an agreement with the renowned architects responsible for Wankhede Stadium's design, Shashi Prabhu & Associates. The purpose of this collaboration is to comprehensively refurbish the entire venue in preparation for the World Cup. Although time constraints loom, the MCA is fully committed to improving restroom facilities, constructing a ramp for differently-abled spectators, and creating a more spectator-friendly ambiance. Notably, the re-laid outfield already presents a lush green appearance, according to sources.

Impressive Financial Gains Expected

In a significant financial revelation, the Mumbai Cricket Association is anticipated to reap substantial revenue, estimated at Rs 150 crore, from the sale of hospitality boxes at Wankhede Stadium during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Two prominent companies, DreamSetGo (a subsidiary of Dream XI) and Cutting Edge, have each offered approximately Rs 50 crore for three boxes and 529 hospitality seats situated on Level 2 of the Vithal Divecha Pavilion at Wankhede Stadium. The agreement spans a decade. However, it's worth noting that certain MCA members have raised concerns regarding the allocation of these seats in the Vithal Divecha Pavilion to a private firm.
