Mumbai: 19-year-old gangraped in Govandi; Police held all 4 accused, including 2 minors

In a heart-wrenching incident, a 19-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by four people in Mumbai's Govandi area on Saturday morning, January 22.

A day later, on Sunday, January 23, Mumbai police have arrested all four accused, including two minors, in connection with the heinous crime.

As per officials, the accused are identified as Ramzan Ali Qureshi, 20, and Sajid Malik, 19. They were arrested in Uran, Navi Mumbai, while they were preparing to flee to Uttar Pradesh by train.

Meanwhile, two minor boys, both 17 years old, have been sent to the Dongri children’s home. They were hiding in the Deonar dumping ground. All the four were acquaintances of the victim, the police said.

The officials stated that around 4.30 am on Saturday, the 19-year-old woman who works with a catering firm was returning home when the four accused allegedly approached her.

One of them asked why she was out at that hour and on the pretext of questioning, he took her to a nearby vacant hut. The four then raped her.

After they left, the girl called up the police control room. She was brought to the police station by Nirbhaya squad officers after a medical check-up. She kept changing her statement as she was in a state of shock.

At least 10 police teams were dispatched to Vajreshwari, Mumbra, Vashi, Belapur, Wadala, CSMT, LT Marg, Mumbai Central railway stations, an official said.

Woman raped inside Tempo in Saki Naka

On September 11, 2021, the most horrifying incident was carried out with a 30-year-old woman in Mumbai, which is considered the safest city for women in the country. The woman was raped inside a tempo in Saki Naka area of Mumbai. She died during treatment in the hospital.

Teen girl raped in Ulhasnagar

On September 14, 2021, a case of rape of a 14-year-old victim has come to light in Ulhasnagar, Mumbai. A 14-year-old girl was raped at Ulhasnagar railway station, after which the police registered a case and arrested a person. A case was registered against this person under POSCO.

Another 15-year-old girl gangraped multiple times in Thane

On September 24, 2021, a 15-year-old girl was gangraped several times at different places in Thane district of Maharashtra in the last eight months. Police had arrested 24 people in this case. Also, two minors were taken into custody.
