Crime branch arrests five bookies from Mumbai for betting on IPL matches

Mumbai Police received information regarding the bookies, and hence, on Tuesday, October 6, the team arrested five people for betting on the IPL matches. As per reports, the police have seized nine mobile phones and cash worth INR 44,000.

Popular cricket tournament, Indian Premier League (IPL), had to bear the brunt of the coronavirus outbreak, as the infection that has spread across the country. Keeping this in mind, officials decided to conduct the league in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and to ensure safety and precautions, matches, this year, are being conducted without spectators.

However, officials at the respective governments, ahead of the league, predicted a possibility of several betting rackets related to the matches and tournament. Following up on the same, Mumbai Police Crime Branch, on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, arrested five people for betting on the IPL matches. As per reports, the police have seized nine mobile phones and cash worth INR 44,000.

The bets were being placed on the match held between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) which is scheduled in Dubai on Thursday, October 8, 2020. Betting was speculated and upon receiving the information, the Crime Branch police conducted a rail and arrested these people from Mumbai's  Byculla area.

The accused have been identified as Wasim Valyani, Mohd. Hanif, Hasham Soratia, Shoaib Ziaul Haq Ansari and Sameer Pawar. Besides this, the Crime Branch has found a diary with the five names involved in the scam, and it also contains the details of other bookies who are also betting on the IPL this year. Hence, as per reports, strict action is likely to be taken by the Crime Branch soon. The accused are currently being interrogated and necessary steps will be taken against those who bet in Mumbai.

According to sources, the Mumbai Indians are currently the favourite among the bookies and the Mumbai team has been priced at INR 4.90. Besides Mumbai, the Hyderabad team is also being favoured by the bookies.

Ahead of the league, Gurugram police had ordered their intelligence wing about the team from the crime branch and station officers from all the districts were directed to keep an eye on the bookies and related activities.
