In another act to curb the drug smuggling in the state, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) carried out a search operation and arrested two drug-peddlers.

The officials also seized 1.7 kg heroin worth INR 5.17 crores, cash worth INR 2.6 lakhs, two cell phones and other material that is used to sell drugs.

The accused have been identified as Aleem Mohammad Akhtar (46) and Chhota Nasir (40) — both residents of a village in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand.

ATS has registered a case against three peddlers of which two have been arrested while the police are on the lookout for the absconding accused.

Officials also stated that they were arrested after registering a case under the NDPS Act against the accused.

Revealing further about the operation, officials said that Juhu and Thane units of the ATS had got information about the drug traffickers and carried out operations at Pelhare village, Vasai in Palghar district on Friday evening, February 4.

The search operation continued till the next day, February 5. Later, on Sunday, February 6, ATS said that 1 kg and 724 grams of heroin drugs were recovered by raiding the place along with INR 2,60,000 cash, and 2 mobile phones.

During the preliminary investigation, the ATS stated they found that the accused supplies drugs to Mumbai from Rajasthan using empty space in the middle of the sole of the new pair of shoes.

The two arrested men were produced in a court which has remanded them in the custody of ATS till February 15.
