In a recent incident on Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as Atal Setu, the Nhava Sheva police have taken action against a driver for reckless driving. The incident occurred when a speeding car, driven by 35-year-old Zara Saqueer, collided with a divider while she was traveling towards Chirle on the MTHL. This incident has raised concerns about road safety on the newly inaugurated bridge, India's longest sea bridge connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai.

The Reckless Maneuver

The police investigation revealed that Saqueer attempted to change lanes without signaling, leading to the collision with the divider. Free Press Journal reported that authorities are now working to determine whether excessive speed or loss of control over the vehicle played a role in the incident. The case has been registered under section 279 (driving/riding a vehicle on public roads in a reckless or negligent manner) and 336 (engaging in an act that endangers human life or the personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

Miraculous Escape Despite High-Speed Impact

According to police reports, Saqueer was driving at a dangerously high speed, causing her car to collide with the divider and flip over before coming to a halt. Despite the severity of the accident, all the vehicle's occupants, including another woman, a child, and two boys, sustained only minor scratches, with no serious injuries reported. However, the car suffered significant damage.

In another alarming incident, an autorickshaw was spotted casually making its way onto the sea bridge. The MTHL regulations clearly prohibit motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheeler tempos, autorickshaws, tractors, tractors with unladen trolleys, animal-drawn vehicles, and slow-moving vehicles from using the bridge. The unauthorized presence of such vehicles prompted immediate action by the Mumbai police.

Safety Concerns Surrounding MTHL

The MTHL, inaugurated by the Prime Minister on January 12, has recently been making headlines for safety concerns. Within just one day of its opening, more than 130 traffic violation tickets were issued to motorists who ignored the prominent "No Stopping" signs on the bridge. Drivers were observed flouting these rules to take selfies and group photos, leading to potential hazards for other road users. As authorities investigate the causes of the recent accident and address safety concerns on the MTHL, it is evident that measures need to be taken to ensure the safe usage of this vital transportation link for residents of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Road safety remains a top priority as the bridge continues to serve as a critical route for commuters in the region.
