The number of people killed in road accidents in the nine months of the lockdown in 2020 happens to be around 10,000.

Even though the number of road accidents last year witnessed a decline due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown, the death toll did not see a drop.

According to sources, the number of people killed in road accidents in the nine months of the lockdown is around 10,000. Most of the accidents were bicycle and motorcycles accidents. Due to the lockdown and the closure of the services, traffic, in general, had witnessed a decline in 2020. However, in these nine months, Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, Pune, Beed, Jalna districts have witnessed the highest number of accidents.

Out of 44 police departments in the state, 28 have not met the target of reducing the number of accidents by 20 per cent. This includes 24 districts. From January to November 2020, a total of 22,196 accidents have been reported in 44 departments. Moreover, a total of 9,920 people have died in accidents so far. In addition, 17,683 people were seriously injured.

Meanwhile, last year, in January-December 2019, there were 30,005 accidents in which 11,634 people died whereas 26,235 people were seriously injured.

According to officials, the highest number of deaths or fatalities were seen on Ghatkopar Mahul Road and Balasaheb Thackeray flyover. Meanwhile, the intersections at Amar Mahal and Godrej Junctions were deemed to be the most vulnerable with the highest number of road crash fatalities observed in the region last year.  The Mumbai Traffic Control Branch separately released its report on road crash fatalities between January to August 2020. The agency revealed that a total of 172 fatalities were recorded in the year 2020 alone. Of these deaths, around 47 per cent were reportedly pedestrians.
