Air Intelligence Unit arrests three gold smugglers

Mumbai - The city's Air Intelligence Unit officers’ intercepted three passengers - Afzal Shabbir Shroff, Salim Anwar Shaikh and Wagle S. A., all Mumbai residents, on their arrival from Bhubeneswar to Mumbai by Air India flight # AI670.

Four gold bars weighing ten tolas each and two cut pieces of gold bars totally weighing 580 gms worth Rs. 15, 39,264 were recovered from the trio, the AIU said.

The AIU also intercepted one more passenger, Mohammed Abdul Shukoor Poovatham Poyil, who was carrying two gold pieces weighing 498 gms and 497 gms each in his baggage, totally weighing 995 gms specially moulded as 'pole piece' which was worth Rs. 26,40,650.

The passenger had coated the gold pieces with silver colour and cleverly fitted the same as one of the parts of an audio speaker. The passenger was arrested and the items seized from him, under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
