AIU busts gold smuggling syndicate; 21 held with gold bars

A team of Air Intelligence Unit seized gold bars weighing 5.665 kg worth Rs 1.70 crore from 21 passengers on the night of May 7 and 8.

Acting on the basis of profiling, the AIU officials recovered 112 cut pieces of gold bars from 21 passengers namely Mohammad Javed Akhtar, Mohammad Iqbal, Fakhruddin, Junaid Ahmad, Mohammad Naem, Mohd. Fahim, Mohd. Iqrar, Mohammed Junaid, Harun, Mohd. Nazim, Maruf, Jishan Aalam, Mohammad Ashfaq, Maharazul Islam, Ajhar Ali, Mohammed Suheal, Amiruddin, Zafar Iqbal, Ishrat Ali, Laiq Ahmad and Zareena Begum who had all arrived by the Jet Airways flight from Jeddah to Mumbai on May 8. The said 112 cut pieces of gold bars totally weighing 5665 grams were concealed by sticking them onto the inner side of the caps of the water bottles and by sticking them to the bottom of the bottles carried by them.

All passengers belong to the village Tanda in Rampur district (UP) and acted as carriers for one Lucknow-based gold smuggling syndicate. All passengers were arrested and subsequently released on bail. This was a major operation and first of its kind in recent past wherein a group of 21 carriers have been arrested and their organised smuggling activities have been unearthed. Further investigation is underway.
