Mumbai police on Wednesday registered three FIRs in connection with the gathering of migrant workers and labourers near Bandra (W) railway station. Thousands of migrants gathered in Mumbai’s Bandra West on Tuesday wanting to go back to their villages.

The Mumbai police registered an FIR against the crowd gathered on the day nationwide lockdown was extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi till May 3. The stranded migrant workers and labourers demanded that authorities make arrangements for their travel.

However, the crowd of nearly 3,000 migrant workers and labourers was later dispersed as the police lathi-charged them. The migrants say that they are stranded in the city due to the nationwide lockdown as they have no money and food. The Mumbai Police, however, registered an FIR against 800 to 1,000 people.

The second FIR filed by Mumbai Police is against one Vinay Dubey who is the President of Uttar Bharatiya Maha Panchayat Association. Dubey had posted a video on social media saying that migrants should take to the streets. He has been arrested by Mumbai Police and has been formally remanded in custody until April 21.

“The government must arrange transport for us so that we can go home. I will walk with you (migrants) all the way to Uttar Pradesh if required,” Dubey, who was picked up from his residence in Navi Mumbai, said in a video.

The third FIR filed by Mumbai Police is against Journalist Rahul Kulkarni of ‘ABP Majha’ for his news report that railways will be running trans for migrant workers and labourers. Kulkarni was detained at him home town Osmanabad and has been called in Mumbai for questioning after which a decision will be taken on whether to arrest him or not, Mumbai police said.

The reporter has been booked under IPC sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (negligence), 270 (malignant act likely to spread infectious disease dangerous to life).
