In a recent development, Amit Katarnaware has lodged a case against BJP MLA Nitesh Rane, the editor of ABP Majha, and an anchor at the New Panvel police station. The case is about Rane's alleged use of the term 'Dalit' in reference to MLA Sanjay Shirsat. The media outlet broadcast it too.

Rane's is accused of using the term 'Dalit', which is considered legally banned in certain contexts. Additionally, during an interview on a Marathi channel, Rane allegedly insulted the tribe of Sanjay Shirsat.

Amit Katarnaware, the complainant, has raised questions about Rane's actions. Katarnaware says that Rane attempted to exploit the Trimbakeshwar temple issue to incite Hindu-Muslim tensions. He also criticised Rane for violating the law while serving as an MLA.

Rane, in response, has made counterclaims against other public figures. He accused Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena of insulting Shirsat's tribe during a separate Marathi channel interview. Rane also justified his use of the term 'Dalit' and labelled it as an 'unconstitutional' expression.

Adding historical context to the controversy, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had previously suggested using the terms 'scheduled caste/tribe' instead of 'Dalit' about five years ago.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Dhanaji Shirsagar confirmed the registration of the case and informed the public that investigations are ongoing. As of now, no individuals involved in the case have been summoned for questioning.
