BMC, Mumbai police launch joint drive against illegal Hookah Parlours & Pan Bidi shops

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai police have launched a crackdown against illegal Hookah Parlours and Pan Bidi shops in the city. The joint drive has resulted in the demolition of several unlawful businesses across the city.

In Malad West, an illegal Hookah Parlour on the terrace of the Aura Hotel was demolished by the authorities on Wednesday morning, May 3. The entire setup, including glasses, tables, and chairs, was destroyed. The police officials have seized its contents.

According to police sources, several illegal Hookah Parlours have been built on building terraces and are selling flavoured hookah with tobacco, which is not allowed. Only organic hookah is legal for sale.

BMC also assisted the police, who received information about illegal hookah parlour, in NDPS special drive.

In addition, the authorities have demolished 886 illegal pan bidi businesses in the last five days. However, some of them have already reappeared, posing a threat, especially outside schools and colleges.

The Mumbai Police have also filed a FIR against 35 owners of paan bidi shops for operating unauthorised businesses on public streets. The police have imposed a fine of INR 200 on 4,276 people for smoking in public places in accordance with the 2003 Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA).
