On Monday, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) received a bomb threat via its official email claiming that four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and RDX were planted in the BSE building, specifically in the Feroz Tower, with a warning of a blast at 3 pm. The email was sent under the name “Comrade Pinarayi Vijayan” using an outbound email ID.

Upon receiving the threat, the BSE authorities immediately informed the police. A bomb detection and disposal team conducted a thorough inspection of the premises but found nothing suspicious. Assistant Manager Sujit Jadhav filed a formal complaint, and a case has been registered at the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar (MRA) Marg police station for creating fear through a bomb threat. The police investigation is ongoing.

Pattern of Threats Across Educational Institutions

This incident follows a troubling pattern in Mumbai, where a series of threatening emails have targeted educational institutions. In the last two months (May and June), 11 international schools and colleges, including one in Dombivli and another in Powai, received similar threats.

The emails frequently reference high-profile terrorist figures such as Ajmal Kasab (Mumbai attacks), Afzal Guru (Parliament attack), and mention the Hyderabad rape case. Each message includes threats involving RDX and bomb blasts, with content largely identical across incidents.

To mask their identity, the perpetrators have been using VPN services based in countries such as Sweden, Australia, the United States, and Norway. In some instances, VPNs traced to Delhi were used, along with Outlook email IDs. So far, five cases have been officially registered related to these threats.
