Crime Branch submits 990-page charge sheet in Manjula Shetye’s death case

On September 26, Tuesday, the crime branch submitted a 990-page charge sheet against six prison officials in the death of prisoner Manjula Shetye’s death case. The charge sheet includes a total number of 182 witnesses out of which 97 are jail inmates and rest are jail officials and doctors.

Amongst the witnesses, the charge sheet has mentioned two important witnesses i.e Indrani Mukerjea and Vaishali Mudane, who testified against the jail officer. Along with this, the charge sheet has a mention of CCTV footage as a part of the evidence.

The incident happened on June 23 around 11 am, when Shetye was allegedly assaulted and killed around 5.30 pm. When Manjula was serving her jail term, she was promoted from an inmate to warden because of her good behaviour and was transferred to Byculla jail, two months back.

The accused, suspended jail superintendent of Byculla prison Manisha Pokharkar, Wasima Sheikh, Bindu Naikode, Sheetal Shegavkar, Aarti Shingne and Surekha Gulwe have been booked under sections 302, 201 and 120 (b) of IPC.
