In a major haul, imported cigarettes valued at Rs 85 lakh hidden inside children's toys have been recovered at the cargo terminal at Nhava Sheva.

Acting on a tipoff, the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) raided the terminal and found the smoke sticks concealed cleverly inside cartons holding children's toys. DRI officials say the strategy of hiding them in toys' cartons was a smart one, aimed at fooling customs and security officials at the Nhava Sheva port.

Of the 133 cartons confiscated, 92 contained toys while the remaining 41 cartons were full of imported cigarettes. Among these are 8,90,000 cigarettes of brands ranging from Dunhill, Gudang Garam, 555 and Benson and Hedges. Officials say the cigarettes were packed in such a way inside the cartons that they could not have been detected by sniffer dogs as well. The DRI is currently investigating the ownership of the consignment.
