Coronavirus Pandemic: Tally of positive policemen in Maharashtra goes up to 531

The 531 cases included 51 police officers and 480 policemen with 65 per cent cases being reported from Mumbai Police.

In order to ensure that the lockdown in the state is followed properly, the policemen have been patrolling the streets of Maharashtra 24x7 and have been putting their lives at risk. Till Wednesday night, the number of policemen infected by COVID-19 in Maharashtra was 422. However, during the early hours of Thursday, the tally breached the 500-mark and till the time of writing this story, 531 cases were reported.

The 531 cases included 51 police officers and 480 policemen from all across the state. About 65 per cent cases that are reported are from Mumbai Police. On the brighter side, 49 out of 293 Mumbai Police personnel who had tested positive for coronavirus, have recovered and also been discharged.

The JJ Marg Police station has emerged as the worst-affected police station in Mumbai. The police station has a staff of 200 cops but is working at half its strength. 27 policemen, including 15 officers, have tested positive for COVID-19 and are in hospital, 40 policemen have been ordered to be in-home quarantine, and close to 33 cops above the age of 55 years have been sent on leave. 

Meanwhile, on Thursday, an assistant sub-inspector of police in Solapur succumbed to COVID-19. The ASI was the fifth fatality due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the risk of the contagion is high for the policemen who have been working in the frontlines, 639 personnel have been quarantined in Maharashtra. Alongside this, a COVID helpline has been started for the family members of police personnel.

The five policemen who have succumbed to COVID-19 are:

  • Vakola Police head constable, Chandrakant Pendurkar (Mumbai Police)
  • Head Constable Sandeep Surve(Mumbai Police)
  • Kurla Traffic Police officer, Shivaji Narayan Sonawane(Mumbai Police)
  • Faraskhana Police Assitant Police Sub-Inspector Dilip Popat Londhe (Pune Police)
  • MIDC Police Assitant Sub-Inspector Tajjuddin Rahman Shaikh (Solapur Police)
