Narayani Awasthi, a 26-year-old nursing student at Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital, committed suicide by hanging herself.

Colleagues and friends living with Narayani found her body, at around 9:00 AM, hanging in the shower, in the hostel bathroom. If sources are to be believed, she left a suicide note behind which reveals the reason why she committed suicide. As per the family and friends, Narayani could have committed suicide due to bullying, as they believe that she had mentioned the same in the letter.

During the Mumbai Rains last week, she and some other colleagues worked additional shifts in the hospital, following which they all decided to apply for compensatory off. Narayani, somehow, had forgotten to sign the memorandum, which later invited a lot of hatred, ragging, and comments from seniors. Despite apologizing, the seniors did not stop bullying.

Officers related to the case have stated that there is no clarity on if she did not sign the memorandum intentionally, or did she genuinely forget. But the wrath with the seniors, even after apologizing, could have left her depressed, eventually leading to her to take such a drastic step.

However, hospital administration had a very different explanation for the suicide. They have mentioned that ever since her admission in 2014, Narayani has not been scoring good grades, and has also failed her exams thrice before. her grades had been low since her admission in 2014, and this year, she had also flunked the third year exams. She was also expected to attempt her exams once again.

Officials, who have registered the Accidental Death Report at the Gamdevi police, have not disclosed anything about the same. Hence, the reason for the suicide remains a question, till date.
