Ahead of the New Year eve, Mumbai police have decided to conduct a special drive to check the drink-and-drive violators as a part of the night curfew nakabandis.

However, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Mumbai Traffic Police have decided to do away with the breath analyser test. Instead, if the police suspect a driver to be drunk, a blood test would be conducted. Furthermore, if the test results confirm the presence of alcohol, a case would be registered under the Motor Vehicles Act. In this case, the case will be registered not only against the driver but all those travelling in that vehicle.

As a part of the night curfew, Mumbai police have stepped up vigilance and already set up checkpoints across the city. The traffic police have created 94 teams along with the Mumbai Police to check drivers on December 31.

In at least 75 locations, these nakabandis will check for not just traffic violations but also those infringing the social distancing norms or found moving without a mask.

In the first three days of night curfew, traffic police fined at least 6,375 motorists, most of them at Mankhurd, where over 600 violators were caught, the police said. The most traffic violations recorded during night curfew were of those not wearing a helmet.

Last year on December 31, the cops had registered a total of 677 cases of drunk driving, after which the traffic police had written a letter to the RTO and suspended the licences of all the drivers for six months.
