An 85-year-old doctor, identified as Naik, was allegedly suffocated to death by his 25-year-old caretaker, Krishna Manbahadur Periyar. The incident occurred in the early morning of Monday at the Helena Apartments in Santacruz West.
According to reports, Naik's face was repeatedly taped with brown tape, and his hands and legs were tied with his own garments. At first, the police thought that Naik was strangled, but the post-mortem report confirmed that he died of suffocation.
Periyar was initially thought to have fled the scene after the attack, but was later arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Ahmedabad after a tip-off from the city police. During questioning, Periyar admitted to stealing Naik's gold chain to pay for his sick mother's medical care. However, he denied any intention to kill Naik, claiming that he did not know that Naik had passed away.
Periyar was remanded in police custody until May 15 after being found with the stolen gold chain of Naik. The police are also verifying with their counterparts in Nepal to check the health status of Periyar's mother.
