A 20-yr-old fashion designer was duped for Rs 87500 by a woman on the pretext of renting an apartment for which she sought advanced payments through online transactions.

The Pune based fashion designer uploaded a post on social media, seeking an apartment in Khar or Bandra in Mumbai on 14th March. Post this, not only was she contacted but also duped. The woman who identified herself as Krutika Batra approached the fashion designer and mentioned that a flat was available on 19th Road, Khar. She requested a deposit of Rs 1.25 lakhs coupled with a rent of Rs 52000.

Post a telephone conversation and exchange of apartment pictures, the accused asked for payment in a bank account that wasn’t hers. The victim’s father then wired Rs 87500, after which the accused broke all communication ties. It was only after a few days that the accused was online and claimed herself as a RAW and CBI agent and challenged her to do anything, threatening to fix her in a false case.

Deciding to take matters into her own hand, the fashion designer managed to connect with Parikshit Arya on social media, whose account her money was wired into. Upon talking to him, she discovered that he too fell prey to Batra’s tactics who he had met on a dating website. Batra asked Arya to share his bank details since she needed Indian bank account details for a bank transfer from China. He was also deceived, of Rs 10 lakhs on the pretence of joining RAW and CBI. He too has lodged a complaint at Dahisar Police Station.

An FIR has been registered at Khar Police Station by the fashion designer on July 3rd and the accused is booked for cheating, impersonation of a public servant and criminal intimidation under sections of the Indian Penal Code, Information Technology Act. Currently, no arrests have been made and the matter is under investigation.
