A Mumbai man was arrested for raping and impregnating his 20-year-old daughter, who is unable to speak and hear.
The father was arrested after lab tests of DNA samples from 17 suspects. The tests confirmed his relationship with the foetus, in a deeply disturbing case from the city's Cuffe Parade neighbourhood.
A deeply disturbing case that first came to light in September last year has taken a shocking turn after forensic evidence identified the woman’s father as the perpetrator, police said.
The investigation began when the woman complained to her grandmother of severe abdominal discomfort. Communicating through hand gestures, she described the sensation as feeling like “insects crawling” inside her stomach. Concerned, the family admitted her to Mumbai’s Cama & Albless Hospital, where doctors discovered she was around five months pregnant. Hospital authorities immediately alerted the police.
Investigators initially faced difficulties as the woman was unable and reluctant to give a statement. When questioned, her father denied any sexual assault and failed to explain how she had become pregnant. He also refused to lodge a formal complaint.
Following sustained counselling, the woman eventually agreed to file a complaint and named two individuals as having sexually assaulted her. Based on her statement, police arrested a man and detained a 17-year-old boy. Authorities also said they are examining the possible involvement of others.
As part of the probe, DNA and blood samples were collected from 17 suspects, including the woman’s father, and compared with genetic material from the foetus. The forensic report, received on January 27, showed a single positive match — the father.
Police believe the sexual assault occurred sometime between March and September 21 last year. The case was formally registered on September 22, and further investigation is ongoing.
