New FIR against Arnab Goswami for assaulting woman cop

If the current case was not enough, a new FIR has been registered on Wednesday evening against Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami. This FIR has been registered against Goswami and two others for allegedly obstructing arrest and assaulting a woman police officer.

The case was registered against Arnab Goswami and others under Section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code at Mumbai's NM Joshi Marg police station. The complaint has been filed by a woman police cop, who was part of the team.

Not only is it alleged that the Goswami and his wife and son misbehave with woman officer, but they also kept the police waiting outside for almost 45 minutes. Furthermore, Goswami's wife tore a portion of arrest papers and threw it.

On Wednesday (November 4) morning, Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, was arrested by Mumbai Police. He has been arrested in connection with the death of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik in Alibaug in 2018. Goswami was arrested from his house and later in the day sent into judicial custody.

53-year-old Anvay Naik was found dead at the first floor of his farmhouse at Kavir Village in Alibaug in 2018 and had left an alleged suicide note accusing Arnab Goswami. However, the case was closed and was only reopened after Naik’s daughter met the DIG and produced more evidence. This led to the DIG initiating an enquiry against police inspector Suresh Warade, who had handled the case, for closing it ‘without investigating thoroughly’.

In retaliation, Republic TV has moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Maharashtra Human Rights Commission against the Mumbai and Raigad police for "unjustly and illegally manhandling, assaulting and arresting Arnab Goswami".
