The Malad police have registered a case against two people for defrauding five budding cricketers of INR 63 lakh by luring them to play in the Ranji tournament. Police on Friday registered a case against Prashant Kamble and Devesh Upadhyay from Mumbai based on the complaint of businessman Santosh Chavan from Chiplun.
According to the complaint, Chavan came in contact with Kamble and Upadhyay in 2018 through some friends. The accused had shown Chavan that they could choose new players to play in the Ranji cricket tournament by pretending to be their identity. Trusting both of them, Chavan told about this to five budding cricketers namely Akshay Kamath, Ravindra Patil, Akash Patil, Ram Kamble and Vikas Chaudhary.
At that time, cricketers expressed their desire to play in Ranji. Chavan took a total of INR 63 lakh from them and gave it to accused Kamble and Upadhyay between June 2018 and December 2021. The police complaint states that this amount was given to the accused in a hotel in Malad (West). The accused also showed Chavan some documents regarding the selection of cricketers for the Ranji tournament to gain his trust.
However, these five youths were not selected. When Chavan asked the two about it, they started giving various reasons. Chavan followed up with both of them a lot. Finally they realised that they had been cheated. Chavan started demanding money from both of them. At that time, it was also found that the accused had prepared fake documents to gain their trust.
Finally, Chavan lodged a complaint with the police in this matter. Acting on Chavan's complaint, the police registered an offence under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal trespass), 465 (forging documents), 468 (forging documents with intent to defraud), 471 (using forged electronic documents) and 34 (common purpose) of the IPC.
