The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday, November 23, arrested a Malawi woman for alleged possession of cocaine worth INR 6 crore at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

The accused, Ellena Kasakatira (43), was caught at the Mumbai airport's arrival hall. On examining her baggage, officials found two packets of cocaine wrapped in black carbon paper detected at the luggage screening, an official said.

The officers of Mumbai zonal unit had received input that one passenger, a female Malawi national, aged around 43 years, travelling from Addis Ababa to Mumbai via Dubai, was supposed to land at 2.20 pm and had concealed certain narcotics substance.

The accused was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act) and produced before Esplanade metropolitan magistrate court. She was remanded to judicial custody till December 7.

A total of 1,000 grams of cocaine, having a market value of INR 6 crore, was recovered from the trolley bag that she was carrying with her.

This is the second seizure of cocaine by the DRI within a span of a week. Earlier, the DRI had seized 502 gm of cocaine which was shipped to India in a parcel and had arrested four persons in connection with the case.
