Recently, it was reported that about 30 COVID-19 cases were found in the Mankhurd Juvenile Correctional Institute. The patients from the institute were rushed immediately to a hospital in Sion for further treatment. However, in less than just a few hours after this incident, four more coronavirus cases were reported in the centre. As per reports, the centre currently has 35 infected patients, including four staff members.
The Correctional Institution is also a shelter home for the disabled which accommodates children as well as the elderly. At present, there are about 268 people residing in this correctional facility. Out of them, 60 people underwent the COVID-19 tests as they were showing some symptoms. Out of these 60 people, 30 were tested positive for the deadly virus.
This includes a child care worker, a cleaning staff, a cook and a disabled child. According to the sources, the infected children and staff have no serious symptoms of the virus.
Following this situation, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya visited the Correctional Institution on Monday and held discussions with the staff. Somaiya claimed that the staff at the Centre had not received their salaries for the last four months. On Tuesday, the BJP leader filed a petition with the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission demanding COVID-19 testing of all inmates and employees of the children's home at the Correction Centre.
Unlike the police, insurance is not provided to the staff at the Centre who risk their lives every day. According to some sources, after this situation was brought to light by the media, some of the staff of the reformatory have been paid one month's salary.
The staff working in Gatimand Bal Correctional Institution and the staff of Mankhurd Juvenile Correctional Institution live in the same staff colony. Recently, it also reported that a guard at the Mankhurd orphanage died due to the virus.
