According to latest reports, at least 18 Kenyan women were intercepted at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Sunday, December 19, by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) for carrying undeclared gold worth INR 1.55 crores.

The women had flown into the country from Nairobi via Sharjah. All of them were on the same flight.

They were carrying small gold bars concealed in Shawarmas, bottles of ground coffee and shoes. Besides, some of them were also found in their undergarments, said officials.

However, only one women has been arrested, while the other 17 have been let go after the undeclared gold was seized from their possession. The arrestee was carrying gold more than the allowed limit.

It was also revealed that so far the women were not found to be involved in any smuggling racket.

They are mostly poor women who bought gold from Kenya at a lower price and wanted to sell it in Mumbai, where the price of gold is much higher.

Officials stated that typically, most of the smuggled gold has its origin in Dubai or Sharjah, therefore, they are increasingly witnessing cases of gold smuggling from African countries.
