On Thursday, December 9, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of customs department at Mumbai airport arrested two foreign nationals and recovered 35kgs if heroin worth INR 240 crores.

The foreign nationals came from Zimbabwe and was landed at Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

According to reports, the drugs were found hidden in their luggage. Meanwhile, AIU official said the attempt at smuggling drugs by the accused has puzzled them as such a large quantity of drugs can be easily detected at the airport by Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) personnel.

The customs department official said the accused have not been produced before a court. It is not clear if AIU officials have already got the consignment tested to ascertain that it is heroin.

Earlier, in September, the custom officers at Mumbai airport arrested two foreigners with Uganda passports for smuggling nearly four kilograms of heroin worth INR 20 crores in the city earlier this week. The accused women happened to be a mother-daughter duo, who brought the contraband from Sudan and were supposed to deliver it to a person in Mumbai.

Besides, through a recently conducted investigation at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) were successful in seizing over 3,600 iPhone 13 models which arrived in the city from Hong Kong
