According to the latest reports, Mumbai saw an eight-fold rise in cyber crimes registered with an average of 42 crimes recorded every day to date this year. In the first six months, nearly 3,196 cases of online fraud were registered in Mumbai with an average of 15 people being victimized by online fraud daily. 

Based on accounts, data from the Mumbai Police show that from January to June 2022, 7,726 registered cases of cyber crimes with the majority of the cases related to online frauds. The city registered the foremost number of 2,506 cases in June which entails 1,093 cases of cyber crimes and 802 cases of online fraud.

Narratives suggest that whilst 309 cyber crimes were registered in January and the number rose to 534 in February. In March, 952 cases were reported. In April and May, 1,468 and 1,957 cases were seen respectively. In accordance with the data, a mere six per cent of the crimes were solved by the authorities in the past six months. Moreover, between January and June, the police solved 401 cases out of 7,726 registered.

Further, from the 3,196 cases registered in the first six months, 94 were investigated and the police succeeded in solving 4 per cent of the registered cases.
